Fences in Action
“Fences,” which won both the Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award for Wilson, seems to
be in perpetual revival these days. A favorite of audiences, the play is one of
his most conventionally written. Rooted in the everyday, it skirts the mysteries
that other works in his decade-by-decade chronicle of 20th century African
American life approach more daringly ....

"Amazing what Wilson can evoke with dialogue and a few props....."

"Fences is a heart-rending picture of an African American family doing the best that they can in the North that rejected them after their migration from the South. Troy is a hard man, but he is someone that you have to feel for because of all the obstacles that have stood in his way from birth."

Director Lou Bellamy is no stranger to the vigorous poetics of the late,
great playwright August Wilson, who died in 2003 at the age of
60.
"I've been fortunate enough to act in, produce, direct more of his work than
anybody. So I know the genesis of that work, what he was meaning by it,"
Bellamy says over coffee at the Backstage cafe near the Denver Performing Arts
Complex.
Tall, handsome and looking decidedly younger than his 68 years, Bellamy has
been in town for three weeks as he readies the Denver Center Theatre Company's
season opener, "Fences," for which Wilson won both the Pulitzer Prize and the
Tony Award.
"Fences" is arguably the most celebrated work in Wilson's 10-play collection
exploring black life in 20th century America known as the Pittsburgh Cycle.
Set in the 1950s, the play tells the story of Troy, a once talented baseball
player who, at 53, works for the sanitation department and is struggling to
provide for his family.
